Peter's Perfect Weekend.
Peter Starling co-owns The Bower Inn with his wife Candida Leaver. He says:
"Our idea of a perfect weekend is one where we get out and about with our two rescue dogs Ben and Ruby and head for the hills! We work hard and do long and unsociable hours.
"Nothing beats getting some space between us and the business to ensure we get some proper rest and relaxation. When you run your own business you very often get bogged down on the day-to-day running of it and its good to take some time out.
"We hop into our camper van and go off to the Quantocks, which were the first in England to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in the mid Fifties. They are formed by a 19 kilometre ridge from Taunton Deane to the Bristol Channel and include wooded combes and open moorland.
"There's loads to see and do around and about, and if you have dogs like us then there are plenty of great walks too. We love to go up to Seven Sisters and to inhale the fresh air and marvel at the stunning view.
"The Seven Sisters is a collection of trees on Cothelstone Hill and from here you can see for miles. If the weather is kind and the day a bright, clear one, you can enjoy a 360 degree view, taking in the Blackdown and Brendon Hills, the West Somerset Coast, the Bristol Channel across to Wales and the Mendip Hills.
"If you walked up with a few things to work out of your system, by the time you have reached the top you really do feel as if you are top of the world. Even if the weather isn't perfect, your mood will be brighter and you'll feel uplifted.
"We've all got hectic lives these days and it is easy to drive past the wonderful countryside that surrounds us without giving it a second glance, but why go anywhere else when you can have a lovely time on your doorstep?
"This is where we can really relax and enjoy the peace and space. And if we have time we will go a little bit further and park up for the night at Waterrow Touring Park, which is a beautiful caravan park and camp site, exclusively for adults, close to the Somerset/Devon border, to the east of Exmoor. We enjoy a good meal at the Rock Inn at Waterrow and everything in our world is instantly perfect!"
