A time traveller's guide to Somerset
Somerset and its historical significance is often overlooked in favour of the more glamorous counties that surround us, such as Dorset and Devon but we've got lots to shout about. With lots of firsts.
For example, not many people know that we have one of the oldest engineered tracks in the world at Avalon Marshes. Our pre-historic ancestors made their way around the moors on these wooden tracks that they devised and built, and 21st century travellers can step back in time when they walk the Ancient Sweet Track, which is not far from us.
Also very close to our hotel is the village of Westonzoyland, which was the site of the last major battle on English soil, the battle of Sedgemoor. Meanwhile the Isle of Athelney is where King Alfred launched his fight back against the Danes in 878. Although the story about the burning of the cakes is thought to be fictional.
Somerset is a county of great inventions too including the ingenious gravity operated railway at Washford, known as The Mineral Line. In Wells at the cathedral, there is an intricate early clock, which is the second oldest clock in the world and at Dunster Castle an underground Victorian reservoir to explore.
We're backing the Secret Somerset campaign put together by Visit Exmoor and Visit Somerset to help promote our county and its very best bits. They have devised a map for people to follow around the best heritage spots and links to this can be found on our website too.
After a day of visiting the area's most interesting heritage sites, guests who stay with us can relax in front of the wood burning stove in our bar and warm their toes or take a soak one of the en suite bathrooms in our 16 luxury bedrooms.
We provide traditional country breaks with contemporary facilities. Guests can enjoy delicious food, sourced from suppliers and producers that are located as near to us as possible, and experience a good night's sleep in one of our cosy beds, which have Hypnos mattresses and duck down or synthetic duvets, or vintage eiderdowns, combined with fine linens.
