Coasteering, caving and biking in secret Somerset

We're offering visitors to Somerset looking for a more active getaway a guide to some of the county's lesser known but adventurous attractions.

We know many thrill-seekers drive through the area on their way to Devon or Cornwall little realising that Somerset is an adventurers' paradise.

Not many people realise that in this part of the world we have some of the highest coastline in England and Wales, so is perfect for coasteering.

There are numerous professionally-run groups, with qualified instructors, that go out to jump off cliffs and scramble over rocks while spotting wildlife at the same time. Somerset is also fabulous for kayaking and harbour porpoises can be seen here all year long if you know the right places to look.

But if you prefer a two-wheeled, on land adventure instead, then the Exmoor and Quantock Hills are relatively undiscovered locations for mountain biking. Remote villages in the middle of Exmoor, such as Exford and Simonsbath are perfect starting points for exploring some of the most challenging routes in the National Park.

Then there's caving. Somerset's Cheddar and Wookey Caves are well-known of course, but did you know this network of caves is the largest in the UK or that Britain's oldest complete human skeleton was found in Cheddar caves? There are some great rock climbing opportunities in this pocket of the county. You need to be a member of the British Mountaineering Council or an affiliated club to climb, but a company based in the area, Xtreme Cheddar, offers climbing for beginners as well.

We're backing the Secret Somerset campaign put together by Visit Exmoor and Visit Somerset to help promote our county and its finest bits. They have devised a map for people to follow showing some of the best activities the county has to offer and links to this can be found on our website too.

After a day of adventure and exertion, guests who stay at The Bower Inn can relax in front of the wood burning stove in the bar and warm their toes or take a soak in one of the en suite bathrooms in the 16 luxury bedrooms.

We provide traditional country breaks with contemporary facilities. Guests can enjoy delicious food, sourced from suppliers and producers that are located as near to us as possible, and experience a good night's sleep in one of our cosy beds, which have Hypnos mattresses and duck down or synthetic duvets, or vintage eiderdowns, combined with fine linens.

Our food is ingredient-led and wholesome from breakfast through to lunch and dinner. Candida's bees work hard to make our breakfast honey, we get our eggs from the farm next door and we make our own vegetarian sausages on-site or source superb pork ones from a local butcher, who gets his meat from local farmers.
